Building a library for your little one is a wonderful way to foster a love for reading from an early age. And a great part of a wind-down routine. But with so many options out there, how do you choose the best books for your little one?  Here are some of our favourites that we recommend for creating the perfect first library for your little bookworm.

1. "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle

A beloved classic, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" follows the journey of a caterpillar as it eats its way through various foods before transforming into a beautiful butterfly. The bright illustrations and simple story make it a favorite for babies and parents alike.  THEMES: Counting, days of the week.

2. "Dream Animals" by Emily Winfield Martin

A great addition to your nap or bedtime routine, featuring beautifully illustrated dreamscapes and kids getting ready for bed. Spark your kids' imaginations and lull them to sleep with this lovely book by Emily Winfield Martin.  

THEMES: Imagination, routine, rest. 

 

3. "I Am A Bunny" by Richard Scarry

With its charming illustrations and simple yet engaging storyline, "I Am A Bunny" introduces children to the wonders of nature through the eyes of a cute little bunny named Nicholas. The book follows Nicholas as he experiences the changing seasons, explores the forest, and interacts with various animals.  THEMES:  Routine, seasons changing.

4. "Potato on a Bike" by Elise Gravel 

A fun, silly book that includes a tickle surprise at the end.  Great for multiple ages and siblings.  Available in French - a great introductory French book!  

5. "Are You My Mother" by PD Eastman

A baby bird emerges from its nest searching for its mother - encountering different animals along the way.  The smaller board book version of Are You My Mother is a good quick read for playtime, before naptime. Using simple language and repetition, children learn to anticipate the next words, and engage using animal sounds.   THEMES:  Repetition, animal sounds

6. "Pajama Time" by Sandra Boynton

Sandra Boynton has a slew of short and fun bedtime books, when you need to get the sillies out before bedtime.  A few of our favourites are:  Pajama Time, The Going To Bed Book and Silly Lullaby.

7. "Things That Go" an Indestructible Book  

The Indestructible Book series are an amazing addition to your play mat, diaper bag, or stroller!  “Books babies can sink their teeth into”, they are rip proof, waterproof, lightweight and portable, and safe for baby to chew or throw around.  A great newborn-to-toddler gift!
